Porous microspheres for Imagify™ are produced by spray drying an emulsion containing PLGA Poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid, a phospholipid and a pore-forming agent that has been used in a wide variety of products with a long history of safety and tolerability. PLGA has been used in biodegradable suture material for decades. Acuphere's proprietary patented technology includes a two-step process that first spray dries the emulsion using nitrogen, which is used as both the atomizing and drying gas. The spray-dried microspheres are further processed to ensure an appropriate size distribution, filled into vials and lyophilized to ensure a long shelf-life.
